ONE MAN’S GARDEN HELPS TO FEED HUNDREDS

KOLD, Channel 13 News in Tucson, Arizona is reporting the story of a local gardener who has been talented and generous enough to help feed hundreds of people in his area of Arizona.

The Green Valley Food Bank has been the fortunate recipient of thousands of pounds of fresh produce thanks to Angela Loscano…and that fresh produce helps many families get the most flavor and mileage that they can out of a few staple foods:

“If they got a can of let’s say of tuna and that was what they were going to use to feed their family, if they add lettuce and tomato and onion to enhance that, it makes it go further,” said Mary Jane Goodrick, branch manager of the Green Valley Community Food Bank.

What a great contribution from a really kind man in this community!

CHRYSLER FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES $200,000 DONATION TO HOUSTON FOOD BANK

MarketWatch and several other news organizations are reporting that The Chrysler Foundation is donating $200,000 to the Houston Food Bank in order to helkp out those people who have been devatstated in the wake of Hurricane Ike.

Due to the value of volume purchasing provided by the Houston Food Bank, the donation amount of $200,000 was nearly doubled, which equated to seven semitrailers filled with food and supplies for distribution.

The Chrysler Foundation had this to say about their recent contribution:

“The Chrysler Foundation is proud to partner with the Houston Food Bank to aid the citizens of Houston whose lives have been devastated by Hurricane Ike,” Brian Glowiak, Vice President — The Chrysler Foundation, said.

“This relief effort came together in under 24 hours thanks to the efforts of food bank organizers, our dealers and their employees, as well as Chrysler LLC Southwest Business Center and Mopar(R) Parts Distribution Center employees in Dallas all working together to support those in a time of need.”

Food Pantries and Food Banks across the United States are always very thankful for the wonderful contributions from companies in the private sector like Chrysler, who step up and give so much back to their communities.

HIGHER FOOD PRICES ARE MAKING IT HARD ON EVERYONE…INCLUDING FOOD BANKS

KXLY in Washington is reporting that the Second Harvest program is a huge factor in bridging the gap between private donations and government food allocations that meet the demands of those who need food in the fall and winter months.

CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE VIDEO THAT SHOWS THE POWER OF THE SECOND HARVEST PROGRAM THAT RUNS THROUGHOUT NORTHERN IDAHO AND WASHINGTON STATE.

What a great program…and all of the many farmers who contribute to this humanitarian program, without compensation, thank you for your generosity and kindness!

It sounds like this type of generosity is going to be much needed in the year 2009 as well…because economic forecasts aren’t showing a lot of positive news going forward…

FLORIDA FOOD BANKS WORKING WITH YOUTH VOLUNTEERS TO FEED THE HUNGRY…

The TC Palm is reporting that youth volunteers throughout Florida’s Treasure Coast region are teaming up with their local food bank in order to support the “Kids Feeding Kids Student Food Drive”.

The Treasure Coast Food Bank was one of 6 food banks across the nation who received a grant from Tyson Foods that would be connected to helping youth volunteers from several schools team up with their local food bank and put on a food drive designed to help children in need.

Schools throughout the area are doing all they can to make sure that kids from their K-12 schools are participating in this great activity sponsored by Tyson Foods and the local food banks.

A great idea by the kids in Port Lucie, Florida and a great gift from Tyson Foods to fuel the success of this food drive!

STORMS IN OHIO HURT THE LOCAL FOOD PANTRIES

The Middletown Journal is reporting that as a result of the recent storms in this area of Ohio, which led to major outages of power, local food pantries were forced to toss away thousands of dollars of perishable food items because they were unable to keep the donations cold.

The article also goes on to report that food banks throughout the country have suffered a 200 million dollar drop in Federal support since 2003 because the U.S. Government is releasing a lot of its supplies onto the open markets in order to take advantage of the huge rise in the prices of commodities.

While this makes good sense economically for the United States Government to make a profit as a result of higher market prices…food pantries need that consistent flow of funding and food that is so vital to helping out those American citizens who are just going through a rough patch in their lives or are suffering as a result of a natural disaster like a hurricane, flood or earthquake.

Here’s to hoping that food banks across the country will continue to be funded generously by the U.S. Government and private citizens…because its a great cause worthy of great support.

FOOD BANKS WORKING HARD TO HELP HURRICANE IKE SURVIVORS…

The Dallas Morning News is reporting that because of the continued struggles of those who were hit the hardest by Hurricane Ike, grocers and food banks from Dallas and Fort Worth are doing all they can to support their fellow food banks in Beaumont and Houston with a massive food drive campaign.

With the help of the general public of Texas as well as grocers like Kroger, Albertsons and Tom Thumb, the North Texas food banks will be able to send more than 4,000 boxes of food and supplies to the victims of the area whose lives were turned upside down by Hurricane Ike.

Props to the citizens of Texas for stepping up and helping the grocers and food banks out…making it possible to send the “relief in boxes” to this particular region of the United States.

Our prayers are with you down there in Texas…
